Mario Vs Sonic
Picture this: you’re sitting in your nerd cave (where else?), perhaps you’re about to order a pizza with your mates, and you’re about to get into a good old game of… Mario or Sonic? Sonic or Mario?
You see, with the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie about to hit the big screen, it got us thinking about two of the most legendary video game franchises of all time!
And while we’re huge fans of both franchises here at PopCase, Sonic and Mario have long been rivals in the gaming world. So, whether you’re a Luigi lover or more of a Tails kinda’ guy, we’re about to cover all bases.
Keep scrolling for a true pit for pit… after all, it wouldn’t be any fun without a little healthy competition.
Both franchises have existed for a few decades (we’ve even been blessed with a collaborative spin-off Olympics series ‘Mario & Sonic At the Olympics’), but let’s get back to the basics. The Mario video game franchise was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and is owned by Nintendo, while our spikey haired blue friend Sonic the Hedgehog was brought to life by the Sonic team, and owned by Sega. Mario came first, making an appearance in 1981 Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong, and Sonic followed a decade later in 1991.
Mario: Yup, here we have our 26-year-old 5’1 Italian plumber. All hail our protagonist and his famous moustache and overalls. Destined for greatness, he grew up in Brooklyn with his younger brother Luigi, before moving on to bigger, better, and of course a way more realistic geographic location… the Mushroom Kingdom. Known for possessing superhuman strength, jumping abilities and a soft spot for a certain peachy princess, Mario always manages to outsmart his rivals.
Sonic: Just 15-years-old, we have our favourite gifted blue hedgehog. And yes, maybe the only blue hedgehog… but anyway! He has incredible skills, with the ability to run at ‘the speed of sound and beyond’. Lighting fast reflexes and the ability to roll up into a little ball like all the regular hedgehogs, Sonic uses this power as a weapon when he attacks his enemies. He also wears hyper friction resistant red sneakers with a white strap and a gold buckle – need we say anymore?
THEIR CURRENCYYes, there’s even a currency in the gaming world. In the Mushroom Kingdom, Gold Coins are the main form of currency, and are collected throughout most Mario games. Their abilities vary from game to game, so you better pay attention.
For Sonic however, gold rings are sought after instead. Just like the gold coins in Mario, each ring varies in strength, however as long as players manage to hold on to at least one ring, it will protect them from… bad stuff. Like losing a life and being beaten by your friend!
As an Italian man with deep family connections, Mario’s sidekick is his brother Luigi. Although a bit of a hero in his own right, Luigi also has superhuman strength, speed, durability, and agility, leading him to accompany Mario on a number of adventures. Fun fact: he can survive being shot out of a cannon. What a man!
Sonic’s right hand man and bestie is Miles "Tails" Prower, otherwise known as Tails. This sweet-natured fox cub looks up to Sonic, standing by his side whenever he can. The ultimate sidekick, Tails is a brave skilled inventor, mechanic… and is also a bit of a genius.
RIVALS. ARCH NEMESIS STYLE.
The main antagonist of the Mario franchise is Bowser. Unfortunately for Mario (and fortunately for us gamers) Bowser is able to breathe fire and perform black magic. Not ideal qualities to have in an arch nemesis…
Dr Eggman – sounds terrifying, right? The arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog is basically an evil genius, and a scientist with an IQ of 300. With huge dreams of dominating the world (naturally), his schemes of creating an ‘Eggman Empire’ are always demolished by Sonic and his friends. A vicious cycle that we all love!
Princess Peach Toadstool. While the name may suggest otherwise (toadstool?), meet the oh so lovely ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. Blonde and pretty in pink, Princess Peach is known as Mario’s love interest, often taking the role of ‘damsel in distress’, and of course finding herself saved by her knight in shining armour… “It’s-a me, Mario!”. Not as defenseless as she may seem, she has the ability to summon healing peaches and can even float. Pretty cool.
Amy Rose. You can’t beat her commitment to Sonic – we quote – “If I had to choose between the world and Sonic, I would choose Sonic!”. That’s the kind of loyalty we’re all dreaming of, no? His self-proclaimed pink-furred GF sadly deals with a strong case of unrequited love, but she boasts super speed, enhanced strength and jumping skills. Oh well, you can’t have it all girl!
Okay so… we haven’t exactly made it easy to choose between the two. In fact, we feel like investing in them both and adding to our collection…
