5 Isolation Themed Movies to watch During Lockdown

Unless you live in a land far, far away, you’re probably stuck (and safe) at home like the rest of us thanks to coronavirus.

Well, well, well, COVID-19 – you can put a stop to almost everything, but you can’t take away our beloved Netflix or Stan account. Ha!

So, if you’re in need of a break from gaming (unlikely) or you’re looking for a distraction from the heading to the snack drawer for the 10th time of the day, we’ve got your lockdown movie list covered.

It’s time to update your ‘to-watch list’ with themed movies. This week we’re going for… you guessed it - isolation.  Keep scrolling for movies that showcase the good, the bad, the ugly, and even the beauty that comes from spending time alone.

Way before he caught (and recovered from) Covid-19, we have a very dishevelled Tom Hanks playing  workaholic Chuck. The movie released in 2000, follows Chuck's journey as he ends up stranded on a deserted tropical island after a plane crash. Not only does he fight for survival, but he even creates a life for himself. This new life of his features a friendship with a volleyball named Wilson. This movie is seriously worth a watch purely for the iconic scene where Wilson falls from a raft and gets lost... grab the tissues, for real.

 127 Hours

Based on a true story, this 2010 British biographical survival drama is pretty epic. Depicting the 127-hours of how a man named Aron Ralston (played by James Franco) saves his own life by cutting off his arm after it gets trapped. Seriously. While this isn’t the nicest of ways to ‘self-isolate’ but the level of courage, mental and physical strength is truly inspirational.

Before there was the Joker, there was Theodore Twombly aka Joaquin Phoenix playing a man who falls in love with… an operating system. An operating system voiced by screen siren Scarlett Johansson may we add, but nevertheless, an operating system that he can’t see, touch or meet. Crazy times. As he pursues ‘her’ he begins to experience how bittersweet it is to love ‘someone’ who simply can’t be present in his life. Oh, to love and be loved.

Home Alone 2

Sure we’ve discussed Home Alone before, but Home Alone 2 – different story (well, not really but why fix what isn’t broken?). And anyway, it was  time for a laugh, so let’s head to New York City with Kevin McCallister. Exactly one year after he was last left home alone (fighting off the most idiotic burglars that ever lived) Kevin finds himself stranded in NYC… and shock, the same criminals are out to get him. Key takeaways? Macaulay Culkin actually used to be cute.

The Holiday

Well it wouldn’t be a well-rounded movie list without a little romance, would it? The narrative follows both Amanda and Iris aka Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as they try to escape from their daily lives to mend their broken hearts. Filmed back in 2006, the UK scenes take place in the picturesque South East of England, which means lots of beautiful houses, scenic landscapes and greenery. Nothing like a bit of escapism during lockdown, hey! Also, Jack Black plays Kate Winslet's love interest and if he’s not enough to make you switch on the movie then  we don’t know what else will.

So there you have it, our must-have iso movies to watch during iso. And remember,  stay safe and stay home people!
